How can you refine your personality? Some persons may think that you can do so by taking care of your exterior. They may say that you have to dress appropriately. Wear a suit when you sit in on important meeting. Don a tie and put on a piece of jewelry. Wear a nice watch. A religiously inclined personality may show off a special necklace with a cross dangling from around his neck. Others may pay attention to whether their hair is black, brown or blond, making sure they are well-groomed and loving the scent of cologne they have used. Some may even wear a pair of finest shoes that fits comfortably. Such attire is beautiful and can strike us as having an air of respectability, but there is a lot more in being the best you can with a refined personality.

More is required to be the best and that is absolutely correct. What about securing at a well-rounded education as long as you live? You will be able to develop intellectually, physically and emotionally and feel at the top of your game. With improved speech and with the right accent you are able to score many more points. Being kind and courteous are good additional qualities to have. Such human characteristics will make you be like an actor in the world. Now you will view your personality as a mask with different colors. Ezra Pound's Personnae (1909) literally means “masks of actor” for we are basically actors on the world's stage. Some persons may even consider their personality in an abstract way like having been blessed with “intelligence,” “goodness,” “cleverness,” “obedience,” “loveliness,” or “happiness.” One or more features of these some may see as the essence of their being.

Imperfections As Gifts

One thing for sure, we all have imperfections. We may work hard to improve ourselves but we may be continually dogged by them. One way in considering ourself holistically is by looking at our imperfections as important gifts. Do not be sad about these but embrace them for what they are. You may be suffering as an alcoholic. What you should do is recognize and take responsibility about this affliction. Seek treatment. Join Alcoholic Anonymous, be open to other alcoholics, family and friends about this problem. Share your story willingly as a blessing in disguise and see the stigma melt away from your conscience. This gift that you looked at in such an abhorrent way, might well be the catalyst for saving countless persons from developing this disease.

Individuals have been known to find and understand their God better through afflictions. Many saints have discovered the almighty more profoundly through suffering and even death. A cancer patient may himself end up giving alms to sufferers of every kind. He may see this as a new vocation. This outlook may inevitably become more than an obligation. With such an affliction, though it may seem gloomy and hopeless to friends, he may well find that what he is doing for others to be valuable. We must always praise such a patient about his charitable undertaking. The consequences of his service must be applauded, for many will find encouragement and strength through his dedication. Contributions like his are always praiseworthy.

There are some that may view imperfections as a bad thing. An American comedian, actor, writer of the TV series Roseanne, Carrie Snow has this to say, “Technology … is a queer thing. It brings you great gifts with one hand, and it stabs you in the back with the other.” Could Carrie be referring to the many faces of media's reports? Sometimes we hear about glorious achievements and contributions of some opinion leaders and soon afterwards it seems as though their names are being dragged through the mud by commentators. Like in life, we are presented with the good, bad and the indifferent, but the wise still learns from these situations. Again, technology whether it is radio, TV, cable or the Internet has its imperfections, but must still be seen as gifts. Imperfect gifts though that truly present us with the different faces of life. God-faring people will benefit from their diverse presentations and the lessons they teach.

With Care And Respectability

Why must we be flippant connivers? We are entrusted at birth with a myriads of gifts. Even a person that is brain-damaged has a gift or gifts to share with us. The tramp that may be ignored is also gifted. In God's providence we are all His caretakers on planet earth. We will not want an aggressive personality running rampant in our cities. Why not do away with jealousy we often nurture about others? Restrain yourself and behave well publicly. Do not be angry about situations you cannot control, for God is always in control. Life is more than a struggle for we are blessed with basic goodness to live through them. Use commonsense, for a lot of situations are not as menacing as they appear. We must sustain honest values in our lifestyle that will always be challenging.

Refining your personality calls for being good-humored about the things of this world. By showing fortitude and persistence we will touch what is truly authentic about life. Be like a Good Samaritan to those we encounter, with eyes focused on our Good Shepherd - Our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. All men are basically good. “Good” can also mean “Holy” as in Good Friday – the Friday preceding Easter Day, the anniversary of Jesus Christ's crucifixion. Allow Jesus to further refine your personality, then you would have touched the true essence of what it is to be whole. So when you attend church on God Friday, you will be doing so to commemorate the special day of celebration of the Lord's Supper, for you would see yourself as fulfilled.
